Hull in for Potts is the only change for England, which is harsh on
potty as he bowled pretty well and supported Atkinson in the 1st innings
very well at Lords. But England are clearly excited by Hulls potential,
but he might be v expensive [last match 20-0-133-1]. Although hes 2
inches taller than Crawley he does look remarkably similar and even
sounds like him. Anyway now we have 2 no11s, have to hope the top order
make some runs other than Root. Weather looks rather damp with probably
lots of interruptions.

He did take 5-74 - I think it was - for England Lions in SL's warm-up
match (which was f-c, unlike many of these matches nowadays).

Yes, replacing Potts does weaken the batting a fraction.

The weather's looking poor enough that I think that for once a Test
might go into day 5.

I'm going off on a week's holiday to the Black Forest on Saturday, so
will miss most of the match (but will program my set-top box to
hopefully record the highlights).

No burglars in darkest Surrey, John? Or do you leave your
servants in charge of the mansion?

I think the risk of burglary is pretty small where I live. It wouldn't
be wise for me to post my address here, of course - though the number of
people reading newsgroups since Google Groups ended is so small that
even doing that probably wouldn't represent a major risk.

If the forcast is accurate even 5 days might not be enough for a result!

Here, 30-40 miles SW of The Oval, we're having a thunderstorm ATM. Not
that much thunder, but plenty of rain, so it's not looking good. Oh
well, at least it will give me more time to pack.

Well we got more play today than I was expecting. If the match had been
held where I live, I don't think there'd have been any play at all.
OTOH, it looks like if they'd played anywhere from Birmingham northwards
they might have had a full day.

It was lucky for Olly Pope - or else it was kind of the umpires - that
the players going off for bad light for the second and final time came
just after he reached his century. The umpires got booed for taking them
off of course, but imagine how much louder the booing would have been
had they done so when Pope was in the nineties.

Anyway a very good day for him and for England. Having scored at almost
five an over, the loss of about half the scheduled overs to bad light
hurt them less than it could have done. The forecast for tomorrow looks
rather better: still the likelihood of showers, but in between those the
light should be better than it was today.

SL bowled rather poorly today and let england off, Duckett was swiping
at everything when there were enough bad balls on offer, then when with
a 100 for the taking got himself out taking needless risks. england were
dominant but gifting wkts lets your opponents back in the game. But
captains innings from Pope just when it was needed. Perhaps england
should schedule 2 tests at the oval each year.

Bad news about Wood, out til next year, but gives chance to all the
other hopefuls if they can stay fit.

Given that Lord's and The Oval tend to get the biggest crowds,
notwithstanding Day 4 tickets for the SL games being a hard sell, it
would make economic sense. But of course the wouldn't go down well in
the north, with four out of six Tests (in a two series summer) being
played in London, so I don't think they could do that..

Yes, very sad. I can't see Wood playing many Tests in future, given his
injury problems and his age. Hopefully by next summer Archer might be
fit to return to the Test side, which would help plug the gap. In spite
of the hype there's been about the speeds of Atkinson and Stone, neither
seems able to reach 90 mph consistently rather than for the odd ball now
and then, though of course they are fine bowlers in spite of that.

Yes indeed. Atkinson was bowling 90+ in the 100 last year but since
joining england hes rarely more than high 80s and in most of the last
test he was 80-85, but hes done very well despite that, and since
bowling 90+ seems to result in serious injury perhaps its just as well.

Exciting morning for both supporters 134 runs 7 wkts, and given the
forcast its understandable why they needed to score quickly but i think
their are other ways of scoring fast than just constantly going for the
big shots. Everyone was caught but not in the slips! Woakes is a proper
batter but hes now become this bazball chancer and hed be so much better
batting normally.

Crazy day today, 3 innings in 1 day. England in the driving seat after
they ran through SL in the morning, but SL bowled very well in the sun
and Englands batters had no answer to it. They tried bazball, they tried
sticking it out, they went for their big shots but only Smith managed
it, and as he was batting with the tail it was the only thing left.
However they were shot out in 34 overs and still in shock when SL
batted. Remarkable test despite the weather, but SL should now win it
tomorrow.

Well Englands test summer ended on a low note on a cold windy day at the
OVal with a brilliant 100 by Nissanka and Slankas first test win outside
Asia for 4 years [against Zimbab]. The way England played after the
first day suggests they havnt learned any lessons from other defeats
last year against oz, and in india. A lot of positives from winning 5
tests, and the perfs of the younger and newer players, but the batting
is still overly reliant on Root, especially in Stokes absence, and brook
had a poor series against SL. Woakes bowled well in every match, and
often without the returns he deserved, but I dont see him as being able
to lead the attack in Pakistan or NZ. Summer certainly feels over here
now, so I hope the weather stays dry enough for the mini ashes series,
more England A vs Oz A. Wisely Gus is gonna sit this 1 out.
