Discussion:
The most ridiculous name of any cricket team?

With the exception of Western Province, most of the South African
domestic f-c sides seem to have fairly daft names nowadays, but this is
surely the daftest: Garden Route Badgers.

I agree as i remarked on this myself last year!

This african badger is not a friendly animal.
There used to be a windian team called the Harpy Eagles [a kind of
vulture].

So not women with wings and taloned feet then. (Wings would be useful if
a batter hit a ball that was going way over a fielder's head.)

def not. Its the mens team. I think Hetmeyer plays for them. The womens
team is called the amazon warriors i believe.

On another forum indian supporters often refer to their team as the
tigers. Now england are always lions in footy, rugby and cricket, but i
wasnt sure what the oz cricket team animal is because crick oz has both
a kangeroo and an emu. So are they the emus? I remember the footy team
was called the socceroos and the rugby the wallabies. Of course it
doesnt have to be an animal since RSA are named after a plant and NZ
after a flightless bird.

I realised that, but couldn't resist an attempt at humour.

Not quite as silly a name as the men's team.

The emus seems to ring a bell, though it doesn't seem to be used very
often.

Well birds are animals, so we can allow that (and the emus too).

The MSA recently beat Abu Dhabi by 3 runs in a T10 match. The top 3 in
team Abudhabi were Salt, Pepper and Bairstow [who hit 70not out off
30balls], which must the most no of england wktkeepers in any foreign
team.

It's a pity that Mustard has (I think) retired, as a top three of Salt,
Pepper and Mustard would have been terrific.

I think his son plays for durham 2nds. Caught Mustard bowled Onions must
have been quite a common occurrence on durham scorecards back in the
day, but i dont think they ever played in the same team for england.

ISTR that Onions only played Tests and Mustard only in limited overs
internationals. But who wants mustard on their onions anyway? :)

I don't ever recall hearing an animal name for the Aus cricket team
The Baggy Greans is about the only name they get outside of "the
Australian team"

I think the rugby team got first dibs on calling themselves the Kiwis,
so the cricketers went for the Black Caps.

The rugby team is almost always called the "all blacks", apparently
the Rugby League team have been called the Kiwis since at least 1926
(they had a kiwi badge on their uniform but didn't like the name,
originally trying to keep using the All Blacks name

i woz wrong again. the amazon warriors are also a mens team [maybe the
harpy eagles didnt sell many shirts etc] and are in the Global Super
League, which has just started in Guyana. Moeen is playing for them.
AIUI its 5 teams from winners of T20 national comps, so Hampshire are
there, but no teams from RSA or India, perhaps cos their players are
otherwise engaged at home tourneys.
