3 test players, Tongue, Bashir and Hartley added to the Lions squad.
Looks a little light on genuine batters, isnt Flintoff snr the coach?
Chooses his own son! I'm surprised Ahmed jnr doesnt make the team,
perhaps hes in a U19 tour. Stanley is another touted 90mph quick bowler
seen briefly in the 100. Not sure what Brown has done to be chosen, like
tongue hes been injured for years and only seems to play t20s.

England Lions squad for tour of Australia: Sonny Baker (Hampshire),
Shoaib Bashir (Somerset), Pat Brown (Derbyshire), James Coles (Sussex),
Sam Cook (Essex), Alex Davies (Warwickshire), Rocky Flintoff
(Lancashire), Tom Hartley (Lancashire), Tom Lawes (Surrey), Freddie
McCann (Nottinghamshire). Ben McKinney (Durham), James Rew (Somerset),
Hamza Shaikh (Warwickshire), Mitch Stanley (Lancashire), Josh Tongue
(Nottinghamshire), John Turner (Hampshire).

Cook looks like the odd one out, being massively more experienced than
almost all the others. Perhaps the idea is that he can act as a mentor
to the younger pace bowlers.

Tom Lawes was the only player to impress in the Lions heavy defeat by
CSA after their winter training camp [doesnt say much for whatever
theyve been doing there], so odd that he was left out for seamers like
brown.

What struck me was how many [shall we say] "unusual" names we
get these days. I'm not thinking of names that would perhaps seem
perfectly normal in other parts of the world, but "Rocky"? AFAICT,
he really is a Rocky, unlike [eg] Marciano, who was a Rocco. Likewise,
"Freddie" seems to be his actual name, not short for Frederick, and
similarly with "Sonny", "Tom" [Hartley] and "Ben". At least "Mitch",
"Josh", "Pat", "Alex" and "Tom" [Lawes] are simply shortened from the
usual full names. Or perhaps Wiki and others are being inconsistent
in not always giving the full names. Not that it matters, of course.
None of us get to choose our own birth names, and in later life you
can be known by whatever name you like. Or "A U".

I have verified with the Civil Registration Birth Index on Ancestry that
"Freddie", "Sonny", "Tom" and "Ben" are correct. Rocky is slightly too
young, as it only goes up to 2007.

There were seven Sonny Bakers born in England between 2001 and 2005,
plus one with Sonny as his middle name, although one of them is also
listed with Baker as the first part of a double-barrelled surname.

Sonny seems a particularly strange choice of name. Whilst it might seem
cute while the recipient is a child, it will seem rather strange by the
time they are 80.

... or a name that the parents fall back on after failing to agree on
another one by the time that they have to register the birth. ;)

Neither of the Jameses is known as "Jim", which is slightly surprising.
It's nice to see a John among the squad, a name which was probably the
commonest amongst my age group but now seems on the verge of extinction.

No double-barrelled surnames, unlike seemingly half of the British
athletics squad nowadays.
