Is it compulsory for players to wear helmets while batting? I was
wondering who was the last test batter or player who didnt wear a helmet
when batting. I can remember Richardson never seemed to but that was 30
years ago.

I believe it is now

I don't think there's been anybody since Richie who regularly went
without one while facing quick bowlers

Batsmen are presumably still at liberty to remove their helmets if two
spinners are on, as ISTR that still happening occasionally, though it's
rare.

It's compulsory for England players, and I'm fairly sure it is in county
cricket. Judging by Hamish's reply, that may well be the case in
Australia as well. I don't know whether any other boards have made it
compulsory, but certainly not all of them.

When Bashir and Root were bowling together in the evening session, both
the Sri Lankan batsmen swapped their helmets for caps, so it looks like
the Sri Lankan board haven't made helmets compulsory.
