Australia's win at Melbourne leaves them needing one win from their last
three matches (one at Sydney and two at Galle), or a draw at Sydney and
one draw at Galle, to qualify for the WTC final.

India need to win at Sydney and for SL to win the series v Aus (or draw
0-0, in which case India and Australia would be level on points &age and
India would qualify on _away_ points %age).

SL need the Sydney Test to be drawn, and to win both Galle Tests.

All of the above assumes that there will be no further points deductions
for slow over-rates.

India have only won one Test at Sydney (out of 13), in 1977/78, but
their last three Tests there have been drawn.

Australia's last three Tests in Galle have resulted in one win and two
defeats.

Correction: India would qualify by having more series wins -
three to two.

it was a good win by oz at MCG, and i expect them to win at Sydney too,
but i'm amazed that SL could still get in the final rathr than oz or
india. If oz and england hadnt lost so many points via slow over rates,
Oz would be top with 71 but england would still be 3rd behind SA with
65. but SA have got to the final by playing only 11 tests and without
playing either oz or england.

No, the deductions are from their points, not their %ages, so without
the deductions, Australia would have 128 points out of a possible 192 =
66.67%, so they would be level with SA, and England would have 136 out
of 264 = 51.52%, so they would be 4th.

Yes, whereas Australia, India and England have not only all played each
other, but also those series were all of 5 Tests, so in the cases of
Australia and India, they will account for more than half of their
matches by the time the qualifying matches are complete.
